How to choose the best art size and place it in your space
Choosing the best art size and then placing the art correctly will highlight and showcase your artwork.
Here are a few guidelines we follow when selecting and placing art:
Placement
When you’re thinking about where to place art, keep in mind all pieces should be at eye level, about 60-65” from the floor.
One piece
If you have one piece of art, place it about 6-8” above the furniture
More than one piece
If you have more than one piece of art to hang, leave 2-3” of space between each piece
Gallery Walls
You’ll want to follow the same rule here and leave about 2-3” of space between each piece on a gallery wall.
Tip – Always lay out the items you’ll use on the floor to see which pieces you want to put next to each other.
To really visualize your spacing, you can cut sheets of packing paper or kraft paper to match the size of the pieces in your gallery wall. Tape those pieces on the wall using painters’ tape to determine the best placement.
Size
The space the art covers should be ⅔ – ¾ the width of the furniture.
Example:
If your sofa is 60” long, the art you’ll place above it should cover 40”-45”.
One piece of art should be 40” – 45” wide.
Two pieces of art should still cover 40” – 45”. Each piece should be about 19”-22” wide.
If you’re using three pieces of art, each piece should be about 12” – 15” wide.
